Different Ways to Improve the Performance of a Webpage

  1. Minimum Page Load Time: The most common and basic way to improve the webpage performance is to minimize the page load time. The two basic ways on which customer depends are
  • Amount of time page takes to load
  • Reliability
  • The surveys from different sites such as Yahoo, Google, Amazon reveals that nearly half of users i.e 50%-60% quit if page takes more than 200ms (milliseconds) to load.
  • Other half who don’t quit are the ones who have reliability regarding the page or have been using it since long.
  • Other say that quick page loads are important for them as it represents the loyalty of page to them.

  1. Optimization of Images:
  • Most of the page load time is wasted in downloading different parts of images.
  • The most common formats in which image is saved are JPEG, PNG & GIF.
  • Images containing less colors and real photos can be best saved in JPEG, while other images which contain loud colors are best saved in PNG & GIF.
  • Both are same but PNG produces lower file size.
  • Sometimes image downloading takes more time which reduces the efficiency of webpage.
  • So, it is suggested to use CSS in place of images and these style sheets for best use should be combined in one and scripts should be reduced and should be put at the bottom of the page.
  1. Minimize File Size:
  • The best way for optimizing the page is by minimizing its size by a technique called compression in which a zip file is created.
  • This can be done by installing compression application on your respective server.
  • The basic purpose of this technique is to get rid of unwanted characters such as spaces, source code comments, tabs.
  • Some of the compression tools available are java script code improver, CSS optimizer.
  • The only reason for the preferred use of these tools is that one can easily undo the text whenever needed without any problem or data loss.
  1. Avoid Inline CSS and Javascript Code:
  • In order to take maximum advantage of caching features of web browser one should avoid using Inline CSS and Java script code.
  • External CSS and Javascript code in your HTML page are automatically cached by browser.
  • When a user shifts from landing page these codes are priorly saved.
  • So, it helps to save time in downloading it again and again. This should , However, be avoided because
  1. In this the code is repeated many times which unnecessarily increases the file size ,thus, making it larger.
  2. Sometimes if for any reason java script is not available. This would unable working of Inline Java script code because elements lacks in having built in fall back interaction handler.
  1. Caching
  • It is very important to know that both web browsers and web servers allow caching.
  • Caching is a technique in which previous requests on the servers and browsers are saved.
  • However, this storage reduces bandwidth use and improves Webpage performance.
  • Nearly half of the users come with empty cache in the first search.
  • So, making page fast is really beneficial for first time users.
  • This can be done by installing caching plugins like WP TOTAL CACHE , WP SUPER CACHE etc in wordpress.

Both are free and easy to download and helps improve performance of page to the maximum. This can, however, be done by only installing plugin.
